Canada to compete at 2011 World Club Championship in Finland

Ottawa, Ontario – September 6, 2011 – Ringette Canada announced today that Canada is set to compete at the 2011 World Club Championship being held in Turku, Finland from December 27, 2011 to January 1, 2012. Canada will be sending two teams from its National Ringette League (NRL) – defending world club champions Cambridge Turbos as well as the Richmond Hill Lightning. Two Canadian officials will also participate in the event - Lorie Grant (Kitchener, ON) who has been officiating for 16 years and Jaimie Nelson (High River, AB) who has been officiating for 14 years.

“When the inaugural World Club Championship kicked off in Sault Ste Marie in 2008, we knew the level of play would be exciting and the event certainly exceeded expectations,” said David Patterson, executive director of Ringette Canada. “Canada impressed then and three years later, we are confident we have what it takes to hold onto the world club title. It is going to be a phenomenal event.”

The event will see competition between the two Canadian teams and the top three teams from the Finnish Elite League - Raisio, Lapinlahti and Luvia.

Defending world-club champion and current Team Canada head coach Glen Gaudet has high hopes for his Turbos. “In Sault Ste Marie, we participated in the best ringette tournament as a club team – every game was close and tough. Going into this we know the Finnish teams will be tough and Richmond Hill is the most improved team in Canada and are getting better every time we meet them. We are going to Turku to defend our title and we know it will be a very difficult task, but we are looking forward to the challenge.”

Richmond Hill Lightning head coach Keith Jasper believes the event will be a tremendous opportunity for his team’s growth and development. “The chance to compete in the World Club Championship will allow our team to move closer to our goal of competing for a national championship. You can’t buy experience – so this will definitely help the athletes develop into better players.”

Lightning forward Jessica Jones from St. Thomas, Ontario, echoes the sentiment of her coach. “Participating in the World Club Championships in Finland will be the highlight of my ringette career. Playing against the best club teams in an intense competition will make us elevate our game to a new level. I am looking forward to the trip and the competition.”

Laura Knowles, chair of the Ringette Canada Officiating Development Committee speaks highly of the officials chosen to participate in the event. “Lorie and Jaimie are two of Canada’s top ringette officials and they both have solid skills and experience. I am very confident they will do a great job officiating on the international stage.”
